Sun Tip-off Their Summer Read To Achieve Program in Mystic

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

In the company of angel fish, bubbles and crustacean friends of the deep blue, the Connecticut Sun launched Read to Achieve: A Summer Reading Program on June 1, 2004 at Mystic Aquarium. Fourth grade students from Charles E. Murphy School were on hand to participate in a reading time-out. The students had the opportunity to hear Katie Douglas, Wendy Palmer, Nykesha Sales, and Lindsay Whalen read sea and animal related stories. The students asked questions ranging from “How long have you been playing basketball?” to “Have you ever played against each other?”. The excited students also received autographs from the players.

Read to Achieve is a year-round, league-wide initiative supported by WNBA, NBA and NBDL teams that promotes the values of reading and on-line literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children. Last season alone, the WNBA held nearly 60 Reading Time-Outs and read aloud to over 15,000 children. The WNBA’s Teams and Players also donated over 17,000 books to schools, libraries and local community groups. To see photos from the event click on the photo gallery below.
