Reading Time-Out with Carey and Swanier

On Wednesday, May 21st, Connecticut Sun guards Jamie Carey and Ketia Swanier traveled to the Waterford Public Library for a Reading Time-Out as part of the “Fast Break To Reading Program” with the WNBA and Pitney Bowes. After being greeted by Nadine Lipman, Head of Children's Services at Waterford Public Library and Kathleen Ryan Mufson, Pitney Bowes director of corporate citizenship and philanthropy, Carey and Swanier settled in with the kids to read two books.

Swanier kicked things off by beginning "Swish!" by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson before handing the book off to Carey, who invited some of the children in attendance up to read the story to the others. Once the book was completed, Ryan Mufson asked the children questions about the book for fun Connecticut Sun prizes. The second story that was read by a combination of Swanier, Carey, Lipman and the children was "The Princesses Have A Ball," written by Teresa Bateman. Once questions were answered about the story and the Connecticut Sun for more prizes, Swanier and Carey answered questions from the audience about themselves, the Sun and basketball in general, took photos with the children and signed autographs.

The Connecticut Sun’s “Reading Time-Out” event was Waterford is the first of five that will be held throughout the WNBA season in different regions of the state as part of the season-long initiative between six WNBA teams and Pitney Boes that is designed to educate youth about reading and to engage fans while raising funds for local, community-based literacy programs. Pitney Bowes’s participation with the WNBA will help build or renovate a Reading and Learning Center at the end of the season in the community of the team that raises the most funds for literacy.
