


![]() | Kelli Freer - 6.04.05 In conjunction with 3rd Annual Girl Scout Sun Fest, the Connecticut Sun would like to honor Kelli Freer of Shelton, with the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero award. Kelli was recently awarded the Girl Scouts Medal of Honor for saving a life. Last October while swimming in the Shelton Community Pool, Kelli noticed her friend lying at the bottom of the pool. Diving 12 feet into the pool she retrieved her friend and helped pull her to safety. |
![]() | Laura Krenicki – 06.18.05 Laura Krenicki a teacher from William J. Johnson Middle School in Colchester, CT. Laura is the devoted advisor for the Best Buddies organization at WJJ Middle School. Best Buddies is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Laura also assisted the Sun in organizing the first Connecticut Sun and Best Buddies Walk for Inclusion this past April. |
![]() | Ron and Mary Ann Tettelbach – 06.28.05 Ron and Mary Ann Tettelbach came to the Komen foundation offering man power, pick-up and trailer trucks, free time and the tireless energy of himself, his wife Mary Ann their children and his staff. Ron personally over saw the Komen’s relocation of 4 different sites to one main office went smoothly. Ron is also the director of Community Crusade for children; a non profit organization whoses goal is to improve the quality of life for children. |
![]() | Melissa Sterry – 06.30.05 Melissa Sterry served in the Connecticut National Guard in Kuwait and was injured during Desert Storm. Undergoing four reconstructive surgeries, Melissa refused to be a victim of her pain. Since her service in the National Guard, Melissa has spent seven years with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief unit and has become a community advocate for veterans. Melissa has also pushed two bills through the 2005 State Legislature that will help Connecticut veterans. |
![]() | Paul McCraven – 06.30.05 Paul McCraven was instrumental in securing the New Alliance Banks donor contribution to the Connecticut Chapter of March of Dimes; which was the largest donation for the chapter. New Alliance Bank’s three hundred thousand dollar donation will allow March of Dimes to fund their Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit Support Project. This project will offer support to families facing premature births. |
![]() | Robert McKeon – 07.22.05 Robert “Red” McKeon started his love for firefighting and emergency services in 1944 when he joined the Occum Volunteer Fire Department. Since then Robert has worked with the US Department of Labor at the Center for Disease and Control developing training for EMT and MRT personnel. Robert also worked in collaboration with the Hartford Hospital to secure air space for a Life Star Helicopter for Hartford Hospital. Robert was recently honored by Occum town with a recreation park named in his honor. |
![]() | Liz Hall – 07.26.05 Liz Hall is the founder of Kids’ Christmas a not for profit organization that provides under privileged families within New London county with gifts of love for the holidays. 15 years ago, Liz took on a second job to make sure no child was overlooked during the holidays. Kids’ Christmas has gone from serving 10 to 450 kids in 15 years. This pass holiday season the Connecticut Sun partnered up with Kids’ Christmas to serve over 600 kids and families. |

Margaret Santerre - 07.28.05 Margaret Santerre. Margaret is the community office manager for Liberty Bank in Norwich. As part of her responsibilities, Margaret coordinates different community events and outreach opportunities for the bank. Her current community project includes the “Save our Subase” t-shirts. To date the S.O.S. t-shirts have raised over eight thousand dollars. These funds will be used to fund activities that raise public awareness and support events surrounding the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission. |

Susan Boughton - 08.09.05 The Connecticut Sun would like to honor Susan Boughton of Danbury, with the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero award. Susan is a teacher’s assistant at Shelter Rock Elementary School where she has worked tirelessly for years helping deserving families. One of Susan’s latest projects is the box top collection program. This program has rewarded the school to buy much needed schools supplies to help enhance lessons for ESL students. Susan continues to affect the entire community with her love and generosity. The Connecticut Sun and Cascade will like to thank Susan Boughton for her commitment to the community. |

S.T.A.R. Team - 08.14.05 The Connecticut Sun would like to honor the S.T.A.R. Team, with the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero award. The S.T.A.R. Team, Stop Think And Recycle, is comprised of 7th graders from Marlborough Middle School in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The team has made great contributions to the town by implementing a recycling program in all three of the surrounding elementary schools. In the process of learning and educating others about the importance of recycling, the team was also able to help the town of Marlborough save money. The Connecticut Sun and Cascade will like to thank the S.T.A.R. Team for their commitment to the community. | |

Noah Lurie - 08.20.05 The Connecticut Sun would like to honor Rosemary Brandi of Hamden and Noah Lurie of Woodbridge, with the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero award. Noah started collecting hats when a family friend was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly after Noah started collecting hats he linked up with Rosemary Brandi who runs Don’s Hat Rack at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Don’s Hat Rack provides hats to cancer patients as they go through chemotherapy. In addition to presenting Rosemary and Noah with the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero award, the Connecticut Sun would like to donate 25 Connecticut Sun hats to Don’s Hat Rack. |

David and Merele Silver, Gail Giampolo - 08.26.05 Tonight, the Connecticut Sun would like to honor two individuals for the Cascade Dish and Assist Hero Award David and Merle Silver from the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, along with Gail Giampolo the organizer of Nikki’s Run. David and Merle Silver are longtime committed volunteers for the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, where they serve as weekend house managers, cook meals and assist the families living in the house. They also served as last year’s co-chaired for the GALA and Trees of Hope event, the Ronald McDonald House’s biggest fundraiser. Gail Giampolo lost her daughter Nikki in 2002 cancer. Gail has shared Nikki’s story of courage and hope to thousands including Build-A-Bear Workshop. Build-A-Bear Workshop was inspired by Nikki’s story and has created Nikki’s Bear. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Nikki’s Bear will be distributed through the Build-A-Workshop Foundation to fund children’s health and wellness programs. In addition, Gail Giampolo would like to present the Connecticut Sun with its very own Nikki’s Bear wearing a Connecticut Sun T-Shirt. The Connecticut Sun and Cascade would like to thank both David and Merle Silver and Gail Giampolo for their commitment to our community. |
