Interview with Jess Brungo and Brooke Wyckoff

By Lauren B.

During my awesome experience of being a baseline reporter, I had the chance to interview Jessica Brungo and Brooke Wyckoff. These are my interviews.

What make the Sun click as a team?
JB: The team chemistry and the leaders.

You're playing the Mystics today, what do you think are the Washington Mystics biggest strengths?
JB: They also have a good balance of players and they're good inside/outside shooters.
BW: They are a fast and athletic team, they rebound very well.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
JB: Several of us car pool together, we listen to the same songs in the car. When I get here, I have to make ten baskets from each point I shoot at.
BW: I have my ankles taped.

What are your hobbies besides basketball?
JB: Volleyball, movies.
BW: Reading, shopping.

When the team is losing at half time, what is done or said in the locker room that influences you to play harder and pull ahead?
JB: Our team leaders tell us just to have fun. I think we do better in the 2nd half.
BW: We talk to each other about what we need to do better and changes we need to make. We encourage each other a lot.

If you couldn't do basketball, what would you do?
JB: I majored in education in college, so I'd try to become a teacher.
BW: I'd cry. (Laughing) I would want to become a teacher.

I've seen that WNBA players participate in a lot of community events, what's your favorite event?
JB: Read to Achieve
BW: Read to Achieve

Chocolate or Vanilla?
JB: Chocolate
BW: Chocolate

After interviewing players, I took my place on the sidelines to watch the first half. Whalen, Douglas, Sales, Jones and McWilliams-Franklin started the half. Asjha Jones started out this fast paced game with the first basket. Nykesha Sales made several three point shots; she ended the game with seventeen points. With less than five seconds left in the half, Lindsay Whalen threw up a seemingly wild shot past the three point line, and it falls through, making the Sun's lead jump from nine to twelve points at half time. The final score at the end of the half was Mystics 30, Sun 42. Being Debbie Black Day, during half time there was a great ceremony honoring Debbie Black (definitely on of my favorite players :) ). The master of ceremonies explained her great accomplishments and her contribution to the Connecticut Sun. There was also a video showing some of her greatest plays. She thanked everyone and the staff at the Sun honored her with a framed Sun jersey. Then, I got to go back to sit with my family and watch rest of the game. It was a nail-biter! The final score at the end of the second half was Mystics 77, Sun 80.
