Bright Side To Sun Loss

By Amanda H- Baseline Reporter

The Connecticut Sun’s match up against the New York Liberty on August 20, 2005, was very exciting. Before that, however, I had some excitement of my own.

As baseline reporter, I was greeted by a member of the Sun staff who took me into the locker room where I was able to chat with Margo Dydek as she prepared for pre-game warm-ups. We briefly talked about how they prepare for a game. She explained that, while there is a lot of team preparation before each game, as well as pep talks from the coaches, there is also time to do their own “individual stuff.” When asked about her opinion of the season, she replied, “We’re doing very well. You can see our record and everybody’s happy. The most important thing is the players. We need to get focused, play a good game, and fight for the championship.”

Next I went out onto the court where the rest of the team was warming up. I was immediately greeted by Jen Derevjanik who complemented my jersey, a replica of hers. I then talked to Jamie Carey about her rookie season. She told me how much fun she is having and that she is learning a lot. I also chatted with Jessica Brungo. Instead of discussing games or basketball in general, we talked about her hobbies. Jess told me that in her spare time she loves to go to the beach, to the movies, and shopping.

The game was due to start soon, so I took my place at the press table. The view of the court was awesome. At the start of the game, Margo Dydek tipped the ball to Katie Douglas. Even though Shameka Christon scored the first points of the game for the New York Liberty, it was a very intense and thrilling game. The half-time show was incredible. All the local mascots such as Wally the Green Monster of the Boston Red Sox and Jonathon of the UConn Huskies had their own hilarious basketball game which the younger fans thoroughly enjoyed. As the game continued, Lindsay Whalen led the Sun scoring 22 points and showing a lot of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, in the end, New York triumphed 64-58. Although the outcome of the game was not exactly what we Sun fans had hoped for, it was a night I will never forget.
