Blaze, the Connecticut Sun mascot, was on hand Monday as Pitney Bowes hosted a special Reading Time-Out to celebrate its achievement of One Million Miles read as part of the WNBA's Fast Break To Reading program.
Approximately 75 Stamford-area youth , along with Pitney Bowes employees and their children, attended the event. Former WNBA stars Nykesha Sales and Kym Hampton, WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations Renee Brown and Pitney Bowes Chief Marking and Communications Officer Juanita James read "The Phantom Tollbooth" to the group, and then the players and Blaze were available for autographs.
The event was a culmination of a season-long national literacy initiative between Pitney Bowes and the WNBA. Beginning in June, children were encourage to track their reading minutes at www.wnba.com/fbtr.
Ten WNBA teams, including the Sun, participated in the Fast Break To Reading program in 2009. Teams tipped off their initiatives in June in collaboration with local literacy organizations.
