Wolcott Tech Named Sun Team Of The Week
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (December 23, 2008) — Oliver Wolcott Technical High School of Torrington has been selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls’ Basketball Team of the Week, presented by WFSB Channel 3 and Friday Night Frenzy, in association with Camaro Signs of Yantic, for the week of Dec. 15-21.
Wolcott Tech defeated Gilbert, 54-43, on Thursday, Dec. 18th, the first victory for the school since a 55-44 win over Litchfield on Feb. 9, 1990. Thursdays triumph snapped a 265-game losing streak for the Wildcats.
With the game tied 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter, the Wildcats outscored Gilbert, 21-10, in the quarter to clinch the victory. Alyssa Paniati scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Wolcott Tech in the victory. Arielle Levesque also scored 15 points for the Wildcats while Sarah Zbell added six.
This is the third season the Connecticut Sun has recognized a Team of the Week. Each winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault.
The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local high school girls’ basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also host a CIAC Championship luncheon, and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.
The Sun have been one of the most successful teams in the WNBA, winning more games than any team in the league since 2003 and have qualified for the playoffs every year.
