Kennedy Named Team of the Week

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (January 5, 2009) — Kennedy High School of Waterbury has been selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls’ Basketball Team of the Week, presented by WFSB Channel 3 and Friday Night Frenzy, in association with Camaro Signs of Yantic, for the week of Dec. 29-January 4.

On December 30th, Kennedy edged four-time Naugatuck Valley Conference champion Holy Cross 56-51, handing the Crusaders their first league defeat in 86 games dating back to January of 2005. Kennedy guard Amber Alberto led the way with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks while teammates Kasiana Goodman (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Marybeth Willis (11 rebounds) made key contributions.

Later in the week, Alberto became the all-time leading scorer in program history during a 67-41 win over Ansonia on January 3rd. Alberto finished with 20 points for Kennedy, giving her 1,223 career points. The previous record of 1,203 points was set by Deidra Williams in 1985.

This is the third season the Connecticut Sun has recognized a Team of the Week. Each winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault.

The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local high school girls’ basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also host a CIAC Championship luncheon, and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.

The Sun have been one of the most successful teams in the WNBA, winning more games than any team in the league since 2003 and have qualified for the playoffs every year.
