Jekabsone-Zogota Joins Sun, Turner Waived

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (June 28, 2009) — Anete Jekabsone-Zogota of Latvia has joined the Connecticut Sun and worked out with the team for the first time on Sunday at Connecticut College.

“When I was younger, it was my dream to play in the WNBA,” Jekabsone-Zogota said Sunday. “It is the highest level to play basketball. It was a good practice today. I got to know some plays, know some teammates and do some shooting. For the first time (practicing with the Sun) I’m happy.”

Signed by the Sun in February, the 5-foot-9 Jekabsone-Zogota remained in Latvia to represent her country at the 2009 Eurobasket Women’s Championship during the month of June. She averaged 20.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists for Latvia, which placed seventh in the tournament.

To make room on the 11 player roster for Jekabsone-Zogota, the Sun waived veteran Barbara Turner. The former UConn star led the Sun with 44 made three-pointers in 2008 but shot 8-of-39 (20.5%) from the field this season, making just 4-of-35 (16.0%) three-point attempts.

“Barbara helped us a lot last year, but she struggled this season and got caught up in a numbers game,” Sun head coach Mike Thibault said.

The Sun are 4-3 following Saturday’s win over the Atlanta Dream. Connecticut will return to action at Indiana on Thursday, July 3rd at 7 p.m.
