Editor's Note: At the end of April, Coach Thibault and family visited Ireland to work a series of basketball clinics. Before prepping for the end of the school year, Eric gladly shared some thoughts about the trip, and a few photos, with us. Enjoy!
When my family and I traveled to Ireland to work some basketball clinics, we really didn’t know what to expect. Basketball is not among the few most popular Irish sports – Gaelic football, soccer, rugby and hurling grab most of the attention. What we found was an exceptionally passionate group of people that care about and appreciate the game, despite operating mostly under the radar.
My dad, my sister Carly, and I worked clinics around the country – from Dublin to Listowel to Limerick. We also traveled to Scotland for two days and ran a clinic at a school outside of Edinburgh. I was really impressed by the skill we saw from the players, especially considering they often don’t get as much competition or gym time as their counterparts in the States. It was clear that they enjoy the chances they do get, and were eager to learn from a WNBA coach (and, to a lesser degree, from his two kids).
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and got a reminder that this is truly a global game – that there’s always someone out there trying to make it in basketball.
