Storm forward Shyra Ely was one of the nation's most coveted recruits coming out of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, Ind. Gatorade's National High School Player of the Year, Ely chose national power Tennessee over nearby Purdue and helped the Lady Vols to four Final Four appearances in as many years. A Third Team AP All-American as a junior, Ely moved from power forward to small forward as a senior, limiting her numbers but helping her transition to the perimeter in the WNBA. Drafted by San Antonio with the first pick of the second round, Ely started 11 games and averaged 4.5 points as a rookie. After a broken foot hampered her sophomore season, Ely joined the Storm in 2007 and served as a reserve at both forward positions for two seasons before signing with the Chicago Sky as a restricted free agent prior to the 2009 season.
