The daughter of long-time NBA big man Jim Chones, Kaayla Chones grew up around basketball (her sister Kareeda played at Marquette), and the results were quickly evident. Chones was a highly-touted prospect in the Cleveland area, where she played against future Storm teammate Barbara Turner. Co-Miss Basketball for the state of Ohio as both a junior and a senior, Chones headed to North Carolina State, where she averaged double-figures all four seasons of her career, finished as the Wolfpack's sixth all-time leading rebounder and 11th all-time leading scorer and was First Team All-ACC as a senior. Picked early in the second round of the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics, Chones saw limited playing time in two seasons before being waived by Washington in 2006 training camp. A day later, she was signed by the Storm to provide depth up front.
