Iziane Castro Marques has always been a precocious basketball player. At the age of 19, in 2001, Castro Marques led the Paulista League in scoring in her native Brazil. That performance earned her an invitation to the Miami Sol's training camp. Castro Marques made the team and became the second-youngest player in the WNBA in 2002. In 19 games, she averaged 3.5 points per game, coming on late in the season and scoring a career-high 11 points on Aug. 4. After the Sol folded, Castro Marques signed with the Phoenix Mercury, averaging 4.3 points for them in 2003. Castro Marques represented Brazil in the 2004 Athens Olympics as Brazil finished fourth, ranking second on the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game. After signing with the Storm in April 2005, Castro Marques quickly established herself as the starting small forward, starting the last 32 games she played in the 2005 season. Castro Marques re-signed with the Storm in March 2007 after a breakout final month of 2006.
