Storm Fans ’Fuel the Dream’ in Big Way

It was presented as a challenge. In the end, it was no contest.

"Fuel the Dream" Summer Challenge matched the Seattle Storm against the Seattle Sounders in a head-to-head "battle" to raise awareness, funds and food on behalf of Food Lifeline, Washington state's largest hunger relief agency.

The Storm, behind the generosity of its fans, dominated the four-part competition and scored a convincing 90-10 victory. But the biggest winner was Food Lifeline, which received more than 3,400 pounds of food and nearly $3,000 in donations, a total that will provide 20,346 meals.

"Fuel the Dream" Summer Challenge featured a four-part scorecard:

  • On May 18, Storm mascot Doppler visited Sammy Sounder for a soccer shootout competition at the Sounders game (20 points). Doppler won 2-1!
  • On May 23, Sammy Sounder visited Doppler for a game of Bungee Basketball at the Storm game (20 points). Doppler won 3-0!
  • On June 1, Storm players Ashley Robinson and Janell Burse competed against two Sounders players in "Pack the Pallet" at the Food Lifeline Repack Center. (20 points). The two sides tied, packing 17 boxes each.
  • On June 2, Storm and Sounders fans competed to see who can raise the most food and funds to benefit Food Lifeline at their respective games. (40 points). The Sounders collected 1,282 pounds of food and $469.36 in donations, equaling 3,818 meals; Storm fans filled two Toyota Tundra vehicles with 2,122 pounds of food and donated $2,478.34, the equivalent of 16,528 meals! (40 points)
