The Seattle Storm will open its defense of the 2004 WNBA Championship May 21, hosting the Los Angeles Sparks at KeyArena in a nationally-televised showdown of rivals amongst whom there is no love lost. That, and 33 other dates, were announced by the WNBA and by the Storm Thursday.

The Storm's 2005 schedule reflects the respect they earned with their WNBA title run; the Storm will play six times on national television, including their season opener and their finale against Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury.

  • The schedule-makers did the Storm no favor during the month of June. Seattle goes on the road for both of its long road trips, both of four games. The longest East Coast swing of the season sees the Storm visit Connecticut for the first time since the 2004 WNBA Finals, 2003 Champions Detroit, Washington and Charlotte. Later in the month, the Storm tours the West, visiting Los Angeles, Minnesota, Houston and San Antonio.

The Storm makes up for June in July. Certain All-Stars Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson will be in Connecticut for the July 9 All-Star Game almost as long as they'll be on the road the rest of the month, with the Storm playing seven of its nine games at home, including a stretch where the Storm will be at home for two full weeks.

Back-to-backs shouldn't be a problem for the Storm in 2005, as just two are on the schedule - July 7th and 8th at Connecticut and Detroit and July 15th and 16th at home against San Antonio then at Los Angeles. (the Storm had four back-to-back sets in 2004).

The Storm's annual afternoon game will be played on July 13 against Washington.

As last season, the Storm plays every Eastern Conference opponent both at home and on the road, and most Western Conference foes four times. Phoenix will only visit Seattle once, while the Storm only travels to Sacramento once.

Seven Storm games will be played on Saturday, the high of any day of the week, with six apiece on Friday and Sunday and five each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The best news for Storm fans? Opening Night is just 134 days away (and counting)!
