TONIGHT'S NOTES
  • The win moved the Storm within one victory of the all-time WNBA record. Los Angeles won 28 games (28-4) in both 2000 and 2001. The Storm joins the 1997 (27-3) and 2000 (27-5) Houston Comets as teams with 27 wins. The 27 wins are the most since the league expanded the schedule to 34 games in 2003.

  • Storm rookie Jana VeselŠ scored a career-high 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
  • Sue Bird contributed seven points and team-high seven rebounds and a game-high five assists in just 16 minutes.
  • Despite the loss Phoenix finishes the 2010 regular season with a 9-8 record in the Valley of the Sun, making this the seventh consecutive season the team has posted a winning record at home.
  • The leagueís third-best defense (Seattle) held the leagueís highest-scoring offense (Phoenix) under 80 points for just the fourth time this season (1-3). Phoenix is now 1-11 when failing to reach 90 points.
  • The two teams battled through three ties and seven lead changes in the fourth quarter. Leading 68-67 with 4:02 remaining, Seattleís Swin Cash made three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt, pushing the lead to four. Phoenix cut it 71-69 on the next trip but could not overcome the two-possession barrier.
  • In its final regular season home game, the Mercury drew 12,459 fans, the fourth highest attendance of 2010.

    STORM HEAD COACH BRIAN AGLER:

    On the game:
I think we finished off well. Obviously we had some of our key players in against their reserves, but we made some plays. Swin (Cash) made some big plays and we played defense well. I thought everyone that played really contributed tonight.

On the Mercury resting starters down the stretch:
They have to do what they have to do and we have to do what we have to do. I mean I think that everyone has their reasons. I donít think one way or the other about it. When you are in the coaching business, you sort of respect everybody. You have your own issues and you realize everybody else has their things that they are dealing with, so I am sure that there are reasons they did what they wanted to do and I support Corey (Gaines) on whatever his decisions were.

    STORM GUARD TANISHA WRIGHT:

    On the game:
It was a good game for us to get some rhythm and to get some people minutes. It was a good game for them.

On maintaining focus despite having clinched home-court advantage:
Well, it's just knowing that you have bigger goals. Clinching the number one seed is not our ultimate goal, so it doesnít really matter much.

    STORM FORWARD SWIN CASH:

    On the game:
I thought it was a good game for us and an opportunity to get players into the game. We are just gearing up for the playoffs.

On the play of the Storm bench:
It is great to have them come in and they are finding their groove right now. I am really happy to see Ashley (Robinson) get some quality minutes for us and Lauren (Jackson) is going to do her thing. It was nice to see (Jana) VeselŠ get in there for a couple plays and Abby (Bishop) make some plays. We are going to need them. At some point in time in the playoffs, their number is going to be called and I think they prepared themselves all season long and they will be ready.

    PHOENIX HEAD COACH COREY GAINES:
    On the bench's play:
Brooke (Smith) played well, Kara (Braxton) played well. (Taylor) Lilley came in and got some shots, did some things. Itís hard; I was in that position before when I played. Itís tough to come in and not play a lot of games and then come in and play. Itís hard.

    On preparing for the playoffs:
We do have postseason players. We have players when that time of that year comes around they turn it on and go to another level. Thatís a good sign.

    PHOENIX CENTER KARA BRAXTON:
    On her playing time:
Iím feeling really good. They have a lot of confidence in me; they put me in there. They keep me in there running, and make sure I play enough minutes to be able to play at the level that they are expecting me at. Iím doing as much as I can right now, Iím sure theyíre going to push me harder, but we have a couple more years to get me exactly where they want me to be so Iím excited.

    On preparing for the postseason:
I think I just need to stay mentally focused and get ready for the playoffs, because the playoffs are totally different than the regular season; itís a whole new game. New players come with all their A-games and itís something Iím looking forward to. Itís a challenge every night. Iím looking forward to it.

    PHOENIX GUARD TEMEKA JOHNSON:
On staying focused going into the playoffs:
One thing we are doing is concentrating on us. Weíre not really concerned with what other people are doing. We know we control our own destiny and that is our mindset.

On the significance of having home-court advantage in the first round:
Itís always important to start at home; itís almost like your comfort zone. I think it will be great for us to be here, sleep in our own beds and do things like that. Keeping our same routine will be very important for us.

On how this game helped for the playoffs:
I think going into the playoffs and having a chance to see things, being able to step away from the game, not always being in tonight I think we were able to see a lot of things tonight and I think weíll be ready come playoff time.
