TONIGHT'S NOTES
  • The Storm dropped to 3-5 all-time in the first game of a playoff series. The team is 2-0 when losing Game 1 on the road (2004 vs. Connecticut and Sacramento).
  • Los Angeles earned its first Game 1 victory since the 2003 WNBA Finals vs. Detroit. The Sparks are 7-1 all-time in playoff series after winning Game 1, but all seven wins came with the benefit of home-court advantage.
  • Sue Bird's 23 points were a playoff career high. Previously, Bird had 21 points at Phoenix last Aug. 26 in Game 2 of the Storm's series with the Mercury.
  • Ashley Robinson made just her second start of 2008. Robinson started both Storm playoff games last season.
  • Five Sparks players scored double-figures.
  • Los Angeles defeated the Storm in all three games played at the STAPLES Center this season.
  • The Storm's 14 steals were better than in any regular-season game.
  • The Sparks opened the game with a 14-3 run. The Storm never got any closer than six points the rest of the game.

    STORM HEAD COACH BRIAN AGLER:
On the difference in the second half:
I just think we settled down a little bit. I thought L.A. played really well in the first half, they really did. They were playing very well at both ends of the floor and creating some easy opportunities for themselves in transition off our turnovers. I thought that we shot the ball poorly in the first half, turned the ball over early in the game, put ourselves in a hole. I thought we fought back and played with a lot better efficiency in the second half. I liked the way we got to the free-throw line. We had a good spurt in the second half at the defensive end, but we just put ourselves in too big of a hole.

    On the Sparks defense:
It was pretty good defense. They were active, they were alert, they were communicating.. They did a great job of getting a lot of pressure on Sue, no question.

    On playing without Lauren Jackson:
We have had a lot of success despite Lauren Jackson leaving, but I know Sue Bird fought and played well.

On starting Ashley Robinson in a big lineup:
(Lisa) Leslie is obviously a great athlete. With the size that L.A. puts out on the floor, we felt like we matched up pretty well defensively.

    GUARD SUE BIRD:
    On the game:
It was a tough game. I don't think that we came out with the intensity that we should have come out with.

On playing against Sparks guards Shannon Bobbitt and Temeka Johnson:
They are small and with that they are able to go underneath you. Their gameplan was to put as much pressure on as possible and they did a great job.

LOS ANGELES HEAD COACH MICHAEL COOPER:
    On the game:
We played a really great game tonight, but the series is still not over. We still have to work hard and remember that we haven't done anything because we have only won one game. We were in this situation a couple years ago against Houston. We won, blew out Houston, and lost two in their house. We just need to stay focused, and take it one game at a time.

    On Game 2:
We have to prepare for Lauren Jackson, even if she is injured. The basketball gods are telling me that she will be starting on Sunday. They are a good team without her, but an even better team with her. So we have to stay focused mentally.

    LOS ANGELES CENTER LISA LESLIE:
    On the game:
I thought our team came out really aggressive tonight, especially on the defensive end. In the second half they were able to get back in the game, but we allowed Bird to stay calm and not get off tonight. It's all about our defense, especially for me. I had my hands full with Yolanda (Griffith), trying to keep her off the boards. Overall though, our defense came through tonight.

    On her turnovers:
I tried to get my teammates involved tonight by really giving them the ball, but I was just a couple seconds off on the plays that allowed for turnovers. I have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.

    On winning Game 1:
It feels good to be 1-0. It will be hard for them to win two games against us. I am confident that we are going to win on Sunday.
