Recap
TONIGHT'S NOTES
  • Detroit (4-1) was the last undefeated team in the WNBA before its loss to Seattle (5-2) this evening. It also ended Detroit's seven-game regular season winning streak.
  • The Seattle Storm attempted 13 more free throws than Detroit on the night - a trait normally indicative of the Shock. It was the largest free throw discrepancy for Detroit since June 26, 2002 when the Sting took 17 more shots from the line than the Shock.
  • Cheryl Ford grabbed double digit rebounds for the fourth straight game - the longest such streak for the Shock since Ford turned the trick in five straight games at the start of the 2004 WNBA Season.
  • The Shock had outscored the opposition 71-24 on second chance points through four games in 2005 before Wednesday night when the Storm reversed that trend outscoring Detroit 14-6 off of offensive boards.
  • Kara Braxton's five steals are the most by a Shock player during the 2005 season and the most by a Detroit player since Deanna Nolan swiped five on July 28, 2004 at Washington.
  • Deanna Nolan followed up her record-breaking 34-point performance against New York with 23 points vs. Seattle giving her a Shock-record 57 points in consecutive games..

    STORM COACH ANNE DONOVAN:

    On the game:
We had three goals defensively: Try to slow them up in transition, not give them second shots and not put them on the foul line excessively. We followed all three of those things, which after coming off of the trip and the loss yesterday, it really shows a lot about the character of this team.

    On Detroit's second-half run:
We knew they were going to come out stronger they looked to be extremely confident, it didn't look like it bothered them at all to be down twenty at half time. We know that the Shock is a team that is capable of scoring quickly.

    On defending Deanna Nolan:
I don't know if anyone can contain Nolan. We threw Izzy (Castro Marques) and (Betty) Lennox at her and she is just tough to stop. So you try to do the best that you can without losing focus on anybody else because they can come off the bench like Kara Braxton and hurt you.

    GUARD BETTY LENNOX:

On the difference between this win and Tuesday's loss in Connecticut:
The intensity, we came out with aggressiveness and knowing that we let one slip from us in Connecticut. We know that Detroit is a great team and we wanted to catch them not prepared for us and come out with the win.

    DETROIT HEAD COACH BILL LAIMBEER:

    On the Shock:
Our record is not indicative of how bad we're playing right now. It's just not pretty to watch. The effort's not there, we're not ready to play when we come out. Maybe it's poor preparation by the coaches. The effort right now to start the game is lacking.

    On Detroit's posts:
Our post players make the same moves over and over again. We teach them new moves in practice every day, they refuse to implement what we teach them. They want to go back to what they think they know best. Right now it's killing us because we can't score. They won't do what the coaches are teaching them, they do what they want to do. That's the problem right now with our basketball players. It was the same habit they had last year.

    On Friday's game against Charlotte:
They're struggling and so are we right now. They're struggling to score points and if we play like this, we're going to be beat. They have a lot of new faces. They need a win very badly and hopefully they're not catching us at the right time.

    FORWARD CHERYL FORD:

    On implementing new moves:
(Coach Laimbeer) has been teaching us new moves and we work on them every day in practice, but we don't bring them to the game. We all have ears and we don't have hearing problems, we're hearing it, but we're not listening. He knows what he's talking about, so we take what he's saying to heart. If we listen and do what we have to do, we'll be okay.

It's a huge adjustment when you're used to doing something else. People know our moves, we're so predictable in the post. I know what he's talking about because I do the same move all the time. It's an adjustment that I know I have to make and I'm trying.

    GUARD CHANDI JONES:

    On the game:
We just came out kind of flat tonight. We played against a great basketball team tonight. They executed well and we didn't, so I'm kind of upset tonight.
