Postgame Quotes/Notes - Storm 76, Indiana 70

Storm (19-13) 76, Indiana (15-17) 70
September 13, 2004

STORM COACH ANNE DONOVAN:

On the win:
It was huge!

On the rebounding in the first half:
We box out better so we can get a running game going. Indiana had seven offensive rebounds and we had one offensive rebound.

On holding the Fever scoreless for over seven minutes in the second half:
We were focused and we played good defense.

On Sue Bird's performance in the second half:
She was able to pick and roll, create switches and we had mismatches.

FORWARD LAUREN JACKSON:

On the game:
We had a good game and were able to pull it out.

On the Storm's defense in the second half:
We went out and knew we had to win the game.

On her key three-point play in the final minute:
Don’t know; got the rebound and was wide open for the shot.

GUARD SUE BIRD:

On the game:
We are fighting for homecourt, trying to finish second. Just trying to do whatever it takes to win. They were playing good defense on me in the 1st half and I didn’t get any good shots. Lauren usually carries that burden (of scoring) so it’s good other players stepped up.

INDIANA COACH BRIAN WINTERS:

On the loss:
Very frustrating. We played much poorer in the 2nd half. I can’t fault the players; they gave total effort tonight.

On whether Jackson beat the shot clock with her putback:
It was very close, it could have gone either way.

On the Storm's run:
Bird got the steal and then made a three. They got some very easy shots. We missed numerous free throws. I felt Natalie got fouled numerous times but nothing was called.

On Tamika Catchings playing through injury:
She is only about 50 percent right now, but she gave everything she had. Two games on the road left. If the team gives the effort they gave tonight, anything can happen.

FORWARD TAMIKA CATCHINGS:

On the difference between the halves:
Great first half - biggest difference in the second half was their offensive rebounds. They started getting more rebounds and converting those and then getting fouls that really hurt us.

On the Storm's bench outscoring Indiana's reserves:
Our defensive strategy was to get the ball out of Jackson and Bird’s hands and make the other players step up and hit shots.

On whether the Fever can rebound with two games left in the season:
Yeah! This is what it comes down to. Our next 2 games are crucial. It will set the tone whether we are in or out of the playoffs. We have to win the next two to give us a chance.

CENTER KELLY SCHUMACHER:

On the difference in her performance since the Olympics break:
The team has shown they need me. My confidence has come from them telling me they need me and that I am working hard. I worked hard in August to come back from an ankle sprain. We have an on-court chemistry that is better offensively for us and we are shooting better. It helped our inside game with me and Natalie, it is hard for the other teams to guard us. Our play inside frees up the perimeter players and Tamika with our inside force.

On the energy difference in the second half:
Ours went down and theirs went up. Both teams played really well and we ended up short at the end.

On whether the Fever can rebound with two games left in the season:
Yeah, for sure. We proved that in the first three games since the break. We have beaten New York and we owe Connecticut. There's nothing I want more than to win in Connecticut.

Notes:
