Postgame Notes - Storm 68, Connecticut 63

Storm (5-2) 68, Connecticut (3-5) 63
June 11, 2004
KeyArena

STORM COACH ANNE DONOVAN:

On the difference in the game tonight:
I don’t think we had the killer instinct tonight. My philosophy is we should have smelled blood tonight. We had Katie Douglas getting hurt early and (Nykesha) Sales not shooting well, we should have just gotten after them and put the hammer down and we didn’t do it. The good news is we got the win tonight and moved to 5-2 with a pretty solid lead in the West. I don’t want to win ugly this year. We’re too talented to win ugly. We played less than our average and we still won.

On Kamila Vodichkova's play:
It’s great, especially since she’s struggled lately. First and foremost, Kamila is the complementary post player we need to make Lauren (Jackson the player she is. Her ability to step up and knock down shots is critical to how well we will do. To see that for the first time tonight is a sigh of relief for all of us. Most of the time, they’re not guarding Kamila, and, for the first time this season, she made them pay. We’ve always had confidence that Kamila was going to come out of that, and that she was going to adjust, but she came out tonight confidence and aggressive.

On not being satisfied with a win:
It wasn’t a great game for us; we weren’t sharp. At halftime and post-game, that is what my conversation is. I have high expectations for this team. We won a game tonight, and I’m happy about that, but I’d have liked to have won it a little bit easier.

FORWARD LAUREN JACKSON:

On the game:
We got the win, that’s the main thing. We didn’t play that well, but the main thing was that we got the win.

On Vodichkova:
She played really well. Kamila is a rock and it’s so important for her to play like that. She’s always there, even when she’s not scoring.

GUARD SUE BIRD:

On Vodichkova:
Kamila didn’t do anything out of character tonight; she just knocked down her shots. For Kamila to knock down those shots was huge for us. It really helped us; she was great. She missed six shots and I’m surprised she missed those six.

On winning without a superb effort:
Obviously, we’re never going to take away from a win. There’s not going to be a little asterisk telling how we played. But at the same time, for our own feelings, we want to play well. We’re definitely going to remember that we didn’t play that well in this game, but it’s also good that we didn’t play that well and we won. Luckily, we came out with the win and now we can head to New York.

On not putting Connecticut away:
Even when were only up by one I never had that feeling of 'uh, oh'. It was never like that. We never really got into it. Defensively, we let them hit some shots and, if anything, we just kept giving them confidence and they kept playing with it.
