SEATTLE - Seattle Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel
Brian Agler announced today that Storm guard 
Shannon “Pee Wee” Johnson will retire from the WNBA at the conclusion of the Storm’s 2009 season.
“It has been my privilege to work with Shannon Johnson throughout her professional basketball career,” said Agler, who coached Johnson on two previous teams – including two championship seasons with the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League and two years with the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars – before signing her to the 2009 Storm roster. “She is one of the league’s finest competitors and a truly wonderful individual who models leadership both on the court and in the community.”

Get Storm Headlines!Before coming to the Storm, Johnson played for the now-defunct Houston Comets. The 5-7 guard started 32 games for the Comets in 2008, averaging 7.7 points, and 5.1 assists per game. She scored a season-high 17 points twice in 2008. Johnson, who notched a career-high 35 points against the Cleveland Rockers on June 8, 2002, ranks 21st on the WNBA’s All-Time list for total points scored with 3,554 in 352 games. She also ranks 13th in assists per game, averaging 4.0 in 352 games, third in total assists with 1,424, and fifth in total steals with 494 over 11 seasons split between Orlando, Connecticut, San Antonio, Detroit, Houston and Seattle.
“I am honored to be finishing my career in Seattle in front of the best fans in the WNBA – and to be retiring with the same coach – Brian Agler –that I started with at the beginning of my professional basketball career,” Johnson said. “Even though it’s only been one year, I’ve made many friends here and will never forget my season in Seattle.”
Johnson was a key player off the bench for the Women’s Senior National Team that captured the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. She has been named to the All-WNBA Second Team three times (1999, 2000 and 2002) and has been named a WNBA All-Star four times (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003).
The former University of South Carolina player was signed by the WNBA and allocated to the Orlando Miracle/Connecticut Sun on May 3, 1999. Johnson was traded, along with the Connecticut Sun’s 21st and 34th overall selections in the 2004 WNBA Draft, to the San Antonio Silver Stars in exchange for the team’s fourth, 16th and 29th picks in the 2004 WNBA Draft. On March 6, 2007 Johnson signed as a free agent with the Detroit Shock and signed, again as a free agent, with the Houston Comets on March 7, 2008.
