Using a variety of makeshift lineups playing short-handed in the team's first preseason game, the Seattle Storm was limited to 29.8% shooting and committed 21 turnovers Wednesday in falling 66-46 to the Chicago Sky at the UIC Pavilion. New Storm Head Coach Brian Agler used the game as an opportunity to evaluate his young players, giving veterans Yolanda Griffith and Sheryl Swoopes the second half off. All 13 players in uniform saw action and 12 played at least 10 minutes, with only two players playing more than 20 minutes. The result was a disjointed effort that saw the Storm struggle to score, particularly in the first and fourth quarters.
Griffith, like Swoopes and eight other players donning a Storm uniform for the first time, scored a team-high nine points and made all three of her shots but committed five turnovers. Forward Shyra Ely, who started and scored six points, was the only other Storm player to top five points. Wings Katie Gearlds and Allie Quigley, two of the team's top shooters, had an off night from the perimeter, combining to shoot 1-for-15 from the field. However, both contributed in other ways, with Gearlds pulling down seven rebounds and Quigley, playing in the same city she played her college ball at DePaul, grabbing five rebounds and handing out a team-high four assists.
