The Seattle Storm has added another player into the mix to replace Sheri Sam at small forward, signing Brazilian wing Iziane Castro Marques, a two-year WNBA veteran.
Castro Marques spent the 2002 season with the Miami Sol and 2003 with the Phoenix Mercury before being waived by Phoenix last May 19. A 6-0 native of Brazil, Castro Marques was the second-youngest player in the WNBA as a 20-year-old rookie in 2002, when she averaged 3.5 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. Castro Marques spent that season with Storm Assistant Coach Jenny Boucek in Miami and is the fourth forward/guard from the 2002 Sol to play for the Storm. (Sandy Brondello, Betty Lennox and Sam are the others.) Castro Marques averaged 4.3 points and 0.8 rebounds with the Mercury.
Castro-Marques spent 2003 with the Mercury.
Currently, Castro Marques is playing in Russia with UMMC Ekaterinburg. She is second on the club in scoring after WNBA All-Star Yolanda Griffith, averaging 18.9 ppg as well as 5.0 rpg and 3.7 apg. UMMC Ekaterinburg finished Women's Superleague Division A play at 15-7, in third place behind VBM-SGAU and Sue Bird's Moscow Dynamo club. Ekaterinburg is currently in the first round of the league playoffs, holding a 1-0 lead over Dynamo-Energiya. (Moscow Dynamo leads Kursk Dynamo 1-0.) In addition to Castro Marques, the Storm has also signed guard Shaquala Williams and center Eva Montesdeoca. The Storm now has 11 players under contract for training camp.
While with the Ducks, Williams was the Pac-10's Player of the Year and its leading scorer in 1999-00 and an All-Pac-10 selection each of the three full seasons she played. A 2003 third-round pick of the Cleveland Rockers, Williams was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks and spent 2003 with the Sparks, averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds. Waived by Los Angeles on May 6, 2004, Williams signed with the Storm five days later but was waived again on May 17.
A Spanish national, Montesdeoca is currently playing for Caja Canarias. The club competed in FIBA Europe Cup Women, with Montesdeoca averaging 4.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Listed at between 6-4 and 6-6, the 23-year-old has averaged 8.9 points and 8.7 rebounds in Liga Feminina play. She is currently tied for sixth in the league in rebounding with new Storm teammate Suzy Batkovic.
Caja Canarias concludes regular-season play this Saturday, and the Liga Feminina playoffs begin a week from Thursday. You can follow Batkovic's and Montesdeoca's performance through the Federacion Espanola de Baloncesto's Web site.
