Cash Wins WNBA Cares Community Assist Award
Sept. 8, 2011
SEATTLE - The WNBA today honored Seattle Storm forward Swin Cash for her commitment to the community with its WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for August. The All-Star plays a leadership role in the team’s social responsibility efforts as the spokesperson for Race for the Cure as well and through her Cash for Kids charity.
August was a busy month for Cash, highlighted by a two-day event that provided more than 50 underprivileged girls quality time with female leadership and mentoring. Cash partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of King County to provide the girls with speakers on topics such as nutrition, leadership and personal appearance. On Aug. 18, the girls were invited to a luncheon and were welcomed by Storm players; each girl received shopping tips and a $200 gift card. As part of a back-to-school-theme three days later, the girls went on a scavenger hunt and received backpacks, school supplies and a new pair of shoes from Nordstrom.
"The message we should share as professional athletes and role models for children is 'Believe, Achieve, and then Lead! This isn't just the motto for Cash for Kids; this is how I try to live my life every day,” said Cash. “By sharing my story, I hope to inspire all children that anything is possible if they put their minds to it.”
In addition to her efforts through her foundation, Cash serves as a mentor with the White House Office of Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships.
The WNBA Community Assist Award is presented monthly during the season to the player who best reflects the league’s passion for making a difference in the community. In recognition of Cash’s charitable efforts, the WNBA is donating $5,000 to Cash for Kids on her behalf.
About Cash for Kids:
In 2005, Cash created Cash Enterprises as a way to support children and families in need. Cash Enterprises encompasses several key components, including Cash for Kids charity; Cash Building Blocks, LP; and Swin Cash Clothing line. The centerpiece is the Cash for Kids charity, which works to educate, motivate and elevate kids. Cash Building Blocks, LP is an urban development company that renovates and offers affordable homes for low-income families. The Cash Clothing line works hand in hand with the Cash for Kids Charity as portions of each purchase go directly to support the charity’s initiatives.
