Burse Named Player of the Week

NEW YORK - Janell Burse of the Seattle Storm was named the WNBA Player of the Week for her role in Seattle's two victories last week. It is the first WNBA Player of the Week honor for Burse and the first time a Storm player besides Lauren Jackson has been named Player of the Week.

Burse, in her second season with Seattle and fifth in the WNBA, scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting and collected six rebounds in the Storm's 79-68 victory over Charlotte on July 29. Burse's previous career high was 21, which she scored on two occasions (June 2, 2005 at Phoenix and July 25, 2003 vs. San Antonio).

Burse also had 13 points and nine rebounds, including seven offensive, while shooting 4-for-5 from the field in the Storm's July 31 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Connecticut's Nykesha Sales, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, New York's Ann Wauters, Sacramento's Rebekkah Brunson, San Antonio's Shannon Johnson and Washington's Alana Beard.

The 2005 WNBA All-Star Game, which was played in front of a sellout crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena, saw the highest scoring game in WNBA history and culminated with a slam dunk by veteran All-Star Lisa Leslie. The ABC telecast reached more international viewers than ever as it was broadcast in 193 countries by 52 telecasters in 31 languages allowing the league's global fan base to witness all the action. WNBA programming is broadcast on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and NBA-TV.
