Bryant Named Sports Executive of the Year

SEATTLE - The Seattle Sports Commission (SSC) is proud to announce the recipients of the following awards, which will be presented at the 76th Annual Sports Star of the Year, presented by ROOT SPORTS™. On January 26, 2011 at Benaroya Hall, honorees will be recognized for their significant impact in our community, and are selected by the Sports Star Committee.

Keith Jackson Award: Dave Niehaus, Seattle Mariners
The Keith Jackson Award is given to a member of the media for excellence in communicating the sports stories of Washington. Dave Niehaus became a beloved Northwest sports icon as lead broadcaster for the Seattle Mariners from their debut in 1977 until his death in 2010. The Niehaus family will be accepting this award on his behalf.

Sports Executive of the Year: Karen Bryant, Seattle Storm
The Sports Executive of the Year is given to an individual for contributions to the success of the regional sports industry. President and CEO Karen Bryant guided the Seattle Storm through an ownership change, hired coach Brian Agler and presided over the franchise’s second championship season.

Sports Citizen of the Year: Paul Allen, Seattle Seahawks/Sounders FC
The Sports Citizen of the Year is given to an individual who has made a significant or compelling contribution to the local community. Seahawks and Trail Blazers owner and Sounders co-owner Paul Allen is one of the nation’s leading philanthropists, with lifetime giving in excess of $1 billion.

Royal Brougham Legend Award: Don James, UW Football
The Royal Brougham Legend Award was introduced at the 75th Annual Sports Star of the Year. This award is given to an individual for a lifetime of achievement in sports and exemplifies the spirit of Washington. Don James is the winningest football coach in University of Washington history. He took the Huskies to six Rose Bowls and won a national title.

Seattle Children’s Inspirational Youth Award: Ike Ditzenberger, Snohomish HS Football
The Seattle Children’s Inspirational Youth Award is given to an inspirational student who has overcome major medical obstacles and returned to the sport he/she loves. Ike Ditzenberger, a Snohomish High School junior with Down Syndrome, became a national inspiration when his touchdown run topped 2.5 million hits on YouTube.

The awards for Professional, Male, Female and Sports Story of the Year will be announced during the show. The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite nominee through Friday, January 21, 2011 at www.seattlesports.org/sportsstar.

At the 76th Annual Sports Star of the Year, presented by ROOT SPORTS™, we will celebrate the records, victories and achievements of sports in 2010. This event has honored nearly 100 of the best athletes, coaches, executives, broadcasters and others in Washington’s sports industry for the past 75 years.
