To finalize its opening-day roster prior to today’s deadline, the Seattle Storm made several moves yesterday. Veteran guard Rita Williams was acquired from the Houston Comets in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft. Guard Chrissy Floyd and forwards Kate Starbird and Stacey Thomas were waived, and the Storm also placed forward/center Danielle McCulley on the injured list with left Achilles tendinitis.

Williams, a six-year WNBA veteran, has career averages of 7.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 154 games. She played with the Washington Mystics for two seasons (1998-99) and the Indiana Fever for two-plus seasons (2000-02). The Fever traded her to the Comets in exchange for Coquese Washington on July 20, 2002. Williams played in 29 games last season between the two teams, starting one. She averaged 4.8 points, 1.7 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game.

Floyd, a third-round pick from Clemson in this year’s draft, had impressed during training camp with her play. However, the Storm wanted a more experienced guard off the bench. Starbird was acquired last July 22 in exchange for Semeka Randall. She played in nine games with the Storm, averaging 5.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in those games. Thomas, who spent the first three years of her career with the Portland Fire, was signed as a free agent on April 30. She averaged 4.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while playing all 32 games for the Fire last season.
