Storm Acquire Starbird in Exchange for Randall

July 22, 2002
The Seattle Storm today acquired veteran guard/forward and former Seattle Reign standout Kate Starbird from the Utah Starzz in exchange for guard Semeka Randall, Storm General Manager and Head Coach Lin Dunn announced.

Starbird has appeared in 15 of Utah’s 22 games this season, averaging 1.7 ppg, .5 rpg and 5.9 mpg. Originally selected by the Seattle Reign with the No. 4 pick overall in the 1997 ABL Draft, Starbird played two seasons with the Reign, averaging 12.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg and 2.8 apg in 59 games. In 1998-99, she ranked fourth in the league in three-point percentage and 13th in scoring.

“We are excited to get a local star in Kate Starbird who can provide this young team with veteran leadership, versatility at the guard and forward positions, and an outstanding three-point shooting touch,” Dunn said.

Randall started in 16 of Seattle’s 22 games this season, averaging 6.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg and 1.4 apg in 21.8 mpg. The Storm selected Randall with the No. 17 pick overall in the 2001 WNBA Draft. She was a member of the University of Tennessee team that won the 1999 NCAA National Championship.

The Storm embark on a four-game road trip beginning tomorrow, July 23 in Houston. The game will be broadcast at 5:30 PDT on SportsRadio 950 KJR AM.
