Coach Donovan Checks In From Athens

With the exception of Van Chancellor, no WNBA coach has been busier this summer than the Storm’s Anne Donovan, who had only two days off between coaching her last Storm game on Aug. 1 and beginning practices as an assistant to Chancellor for the USA Basketball Senior Women’s National Team. The veteran of three U.S. Olympic squads as a player is now in Athens and has helped the U.S. women to a 3-0 record in Group B play. Still, Donovan somehow found the time to answer some of storm.wnba.com’s questions about her experience.

storm.wnba.com: What was your impression about the overall experience of the USA vs. WNBA All-Star Game as an exhibition?
Anne Donovan
: The game had more of an All-Star Game atmosphere, and since it was mostly played with WNBA rules, I don't think Team USA got much out of it as far as our preparation. It was fun to watch the teams play in Radio City Music Hall, though, and be a part of the All-Star-type festivities.

Have you seen any interesting sites or sampled any local cuisine?
Donovan
: The food in Spain was very good. Here in Greece, I have tried a “gyro,” which was wonderful. We are at the gym a lot with practices, games and scouting our opponents, so the typical concessions food fare is our staple. The food on the ship where we are staying is FANTASTIC - so there is no need to worry about me losing any weight!

Is there something you would really like to do over there if you had enough free time?
Donovan
: Like all good tourists, I would like to visit the Acropolis and also shop at the Plaka. Of course, my real heart’s desire would be to take a boat and sail to some of the Greek Isles for some much-needed rest and relaxation, peace and quiet.

How is the U.S. National Team meshing as far as personalities, leadership and practicing together since they are used to playing against each other in the WNBA?
Donovan
: This team is made up of many veteran players who have played internationally for years. Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Dawn Staley have played on three Olympic Teams together. Our most challenging issue has been getting that on-court chemistry again and being totally in sync with one another after such a short training period.

What is your process for scouting the other nations' teams in Group B?
Donovan
: Since I went to the European Qualifying Tournament last October, I have taken a lead in scouting the European teams like the Czech Republic, Spain and Russia. The three assistants all go the games in both Group A and B, and we divide them up as best we can. We have predicted the four teams that we think will come out of Group A and are already scouting them and breaking tape down to prepare for potential matchups.

How is Sue Bird adapting thus far? She seems to be playing good basketball. Do you expect her to see more action than originally anticipated?
Donovan
: Sue has been playing great basketball! Coach Chancellor is finally talking her up quite a bit in meetings and at practices. She has played with so much confidence. I am very proud of her and know she is going to be a factor when we capture the Gold.

How do you assess the play of the other first-time Olympians on the USA roster?
Donovan
: Our “second team” (Sue, Shannon Johnson, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash and Yolanda Griffith) has really picked us up in games. This group is young (with the exception of Yolanda), and their energy level is high and usually makes something good happen. They are all getting valuable Olympic experience that is going to help us win now as well as help Team USA down the road.
