The San Antonio Stars and H-E-B Tournament of Champions Unveil Renovated Young Women's Leadership Academy Gymnasium

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Stars and H-E-B today unveiled the newly renovated gym at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy (SAISD). To celebrate WNBA Cares Week and the start of the 2014 WNBA season, the Stars and H-E-B partnered with the Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA) to update the 60-year-old gym and provide YWLA students with a fresh and current space to exercise and practice. The newly designed Stars- and Cardinals-themed space was provided by H-E-B Tournament of Champions, Silver & Black Give Back and XGrafx.

Stars players, coaches and H-E-B representatives joined the YWLA student-body in a special net cutting ceremony to dedicate the new gym complete with YWLA and Stars-themed designs, fresh paint and new equipment.

“The students and staff of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy are grateful for the generosity shown by the H-E-B Tournament of Champions, Silver & Black Give Back and XGrafx in the renovation of our gym,” said Young Women’s Leadership Academy Principal Delia McLerran. “It is an inspiration to our student-body to see community leaders like H-E-B and the Stars display their commitment to education, health and fitness with this amazing gift.”

Stars assistant coach James Wade and Stars guards Shenise Johnson, Jia Perkins and Danielle Robinson conducted a FIT Clinic in the newly renovated space with members of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy basketball team. The FIT Clinic provides an opportunity for students to receive one-on-one direction from coaches and athletes at the highest level.

“Like the professional athletes here today, the ladies of YWLA are committed to excellence in character, strength, intelligence and leadership. We are fortunate to have all of these young women as an inspiration across San Antonio,” said Silver & Black Give Back executive director Laura Dixon. “It is an honor to partner with the school and provide a space where the young women can continue learning and growing into our next generation of leaders. We’re grateful to the H-E-B Tournament of Champions and Xgrafx for their community-minded partnership and commitment to making a positive impact on our youth.”
