Silver Stars Head Coach Dan Hughes

“Getting out of the gate was so important for us. I thought it set a tone and defensively it was one of those games where we were able to play out of our defense a little bit. Connecticut had a tough shooting night, they had some looks, we have had games like those too. We know how that goes when we are playing this much basketball. I feel real fortunate to end this road trip. Connecticut is really good basketball team any time you get a chance to get a win here you are happy.”

On the nice win after dropping four of five - “We have been on the road so much and this last swing especially, Minnesota, Indiana and here. Our goal is to be a winning road team, we are 7-5, so we have a shot. We shot the ball well today. We got good leadership out of Sophia and Becky and we were able to move the ball. We are just happy to escape and we will move on and get ready for Chicago.”

On how they slowed down Tina Charles - “We gave her a lot of attention. We have decent size and we brought a lot of congestion to her, if Connecticut shoots it well, maybe we can’t do that quite as well. It was just one of those games. She deserves a lot of attention.”

It always feels good to get a road win. It is important to get off to a good start on the road and I thought defensively we were really focused on what we were doing. Our post players did a great job defensively of not just individual defense, but also blocking out and grabbing boards and we were able to run out of our defense and that is a big factor when they do that for us.”

“We have a lot of respect for this team. We know they have some really good players, so you have to be focused and we came off a hard loss at Indy the other day so we are just battling, trying to hang in there, stay in there, it was just a great team win for us all around.”

On how important it was setting the tone early - “It was huge. This game was very important for us on the road. We came out with a mentality to just be as aggressive as possible and pick up the ball full court and stop Renee Montgomery from those pull up jump shots that she is so good at and that was a very big. Jane and Ruth guarded Tina Charles extremely well and Becky just stepped up in the first quarter, that was big.”

On the huge win on the road after dropping 4 of its last 5 - “Whenever we can get a win on the road it is always positive. We were in a little rut and know we have to get focused and come out focused at Chicago. If we could come out every game like we did this game it will be nice to see what happens.”

On the key to shutting down Tina Charles - “I have played against Tina since I was 12 and the biggest thing about her is she runs rim to rim a lot of post players run block to block. Tina goes right at the rim and tries to get two feet as deep as possible so trying to make her take shots where she is not in her comfort zone was definitely key for us.”

Sun Head Coach Mike Thibault

Looking back at his team’s lackluster performance against San Antonio - “Well you all see why San Antonio is pretty good but I wish we had made it interesting. I don’t know which was worse, awful shooting in the first half or our poor defense. It seemed like everything we worked on to prepare for the game defensively we couldn’t get accomplished. We shot the ball awful in the first half, you can’t shoot much worse. We didn’t give ourselves much of a chance. I don’t have an answer for it other than what I told our team is you got to go back to work tomorrow, practice, and get ready for the game on Saturday.”

On the lack of post feeds early on and the struggles of Tina Charles and Asjha Jones in tonight’s game - “I thought we had opportunities to throw it in but it looked like when the ball was on the wing we could have thrown it inside. I thought we missed some opportunities. But if you look at the box score I don’t know if that would have been a great idea in hindsight. Tina and Asjha were absolutely terrific on that West Coast trip. Tonight, between them they just struggled.”

On the quick turnover with the Sun playing on Saturday night against Washington - “I don’t know. I know probably for where we are right now it would be nice to have another day but we’re playing a team Saturday that has to play Friday night so we have no complaints.”

On the loss tonight - “It was one of those games where if you are going to come back, someone is going to have to bring energy. I just felt like the flow of the game for us was lethargic and then some of the stuff we were missing was deflating because it’s stuff that you’ve been making since you’re 7 years old. Really, it’s stuff from layup drills and things like that. Then it was kind of filtering through everybody and you’re trying to find a way to stem the tide on both ends. Usually in a game, you’re trying to fix something on one end. You might be going good on offense but you can’t stop them, or you might be stopping them but you can’t make shots. Like the last game, we were stopping Chicago, but we couldn’t score, but at least one end was kind of going right so you could lean on that end until the other one gets going. Tonight, we were leaking on both ends and that’s hard because you’re trying to plug holes everywhere. We were so disjointed that we weren’t able to put together a run.”

How concerned are you with the offense right now? - “I just think that is part of basketball and part of playing at this point in the season. August in our league is really about your will and your toughness because you’re playing every other day and you’re traveling. This is for every team. Every team has a schedule that’s tough and so a lot of times it’s who can manufacture that energy and who can push through the poor possessions. You have to be able to find ways to win and find ways to help each other execute better.”

On the struggle to rally from a 21-point deficit - “When you’re constantly down 15 or 17, which we were tonight, when you make a run, then you’re still down 11 and that’s hard.”

Was the 72-59 loss a result of fatigue? - “We just missed shots. There have been games where I have been more tired than tonight. You can’t really blame fatigue on that. It just happens sometimes. We started off offensively OK, but we weren’t getting stops on defense. And when you’re not getting things done on offense, you have to get stops on defense, and we just didn’t do that tonight.”

What did San Antonio do to slow down Connecticut’s offense? - “They did a good job of disrupting our offense. I think that is when you get disjointed and you don’t make the shots that you normally make.”

Are you happy that you’re playing again on Saturday so you can forget this loss quickly? - “There is not much time to dwell on this. There is no time to make excuses. We’re playing again on Saturday and it will be a different style of game that we will be facing. Of course, we want to get back on the winning track again.”
