Silver Stars Re-Sign Helen Darling

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Silver Stars Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes announced today that the team has signed veteran guard Helen Darling to a free-agent contract. Per team policy terms of the deal have not been released.

“We are so excited that Helen has decided to continue to be a key part of our future her in San Antonio,” said Hughes. “She is one of the premiere defenders in all of the WNBA and knows how to lead a team. She is a true professional and will be a joy for our fans to watch.”

An integral part of the Silver Stars defense, Darling tallied 45 steals in 2007 ranking her 15th in the league’s total steals category. She also ranked 16th in total assists (103) and was sixth and seventh in steals and assists per 40 minutes, respectively. Overall she averaged 4.1 points, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game on the season.

During her seven seasons in the WNBA, Darling has 4.6 points, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She was the first women’s basketball player in Penn State history to earn Big Ten Player of the Year (2000) honors. She began her WNBA career with Hughes after he drafted her to the Cleveland Rockers. The mother of 5-year-old triplets, Darling has written seven children’s books and spent the 2007-08 off season working for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
