Appel Selected to USA Basketball Training Camp

Silver Stars center Jayne Appel is one of 21 members of the USA Basketball Womenís National Team attending the USA National Teamís May 10-12 training camp in Las Vegas, Nev.

Appel is one of 12 invitees who aided the USA in winning the 2010 FIBA World Championship gold medal. Team USA defeated host Czech Republic, 89-69, in the championship game last October to earn its eighth FIBA World Championship gold medal since 1953.

A native of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Appel played in eight games for Team USA in the World Championship, contributing 14 points while adding 22 rebounds. She played in 28 games for the Silver Stars during her rookie campaign, averaging 3.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest.

Geno Auriemma Ė 2009-10 USA National Team and University of Connecticut head coach Ė will lead the team in workouts along with court coaches Doug Bruno (DePaul University), Corey Gaines (Phoenix Mercury), Jennifer Gillom (Los Angeles Sparks) and Marynell Meadows (Atlanta Dream). Silver Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes will also be on hand during the workouts as a member of the USA Basketball selection committee.

Coaches and selection committee members will use the training camp to start evaluating players for the 2012 Olympic Games. Four-time defending Olympic gold medalists, the U.S. will look to capture a fifth-straight gold medal and extend its 33-game Olympic winning streak at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London. The Olympic basketball competition will be held July 28-Aug. 12 in the Olympic Park Basketball Arena and North Greenwich Arena. Aside from the host country Great Britain and the United State, which earned its berth by virture of claiming the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, the 12-nation field has not yet been set for the 2010 Olympic Games.

Following the USA National Team training camp, Appel will report to San Antonio to begin training camp with the Silver Stars on May 15.
