San Antonio Silver Stars Receive Third Overall Pick in 2014 WNBA Draft

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 10, 2013) – The San Antonio Silver Stars received the No. 3 overall pick for the 2014 WNBA draft via the league’s Draft Lottery, held in Secaucus, N.J. on Tuesday afternoon. The 2014 WNBA Draft will be conducted next April.

The Silver Stars finished the 2013 WNBA season with a 12-22 overall record and were one of four teams to vie for the top overall pick for the upcoming draft. Other lottery teams included the Connecticut Sun (10-24), the New York Liberty (11-23) and the Tulsa Shock (11-23).

“We are pleased to draw the third overall pick in the upcoming draft,” said Silver Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes. “We hope to use this draft as an opportunity to add to a team that saw immense growth in the face of adversity last season. We are in a position to indentify players that will help our organization grow both on and off the court in the coming years.”

San Antonio’s third overall pick marks its highest since the team selected Jessica Davenport with the second overall selection of the first round in 2007. The team then traded Davenport to the New York Liberty in exchange for the rights to Becky Hammon.

In last season’s 2013 WNBA Draft, the Silver Stars owned one first round pick and selected Kayla Alexander with the eighth overall selection. The team also selected Davellyn Whyte (16th overall, second round), Diandra Tchachuang (20th overall, second round) and Whitney Hand (32nd overall, third round).
