Breast Health Awareness Night with The silver Stars to Benefit the Christus Santa Rosa Mobile Mammography Unit

(SAN ANTONIO, TX – August 8, 2013) —CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is proud to present Breast Health Awareness Night with the San Antonio Silver Stars on Saturday, August 17, 2013. Wearing pink uniforms, the San Antonio Silver Stars will face off against the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center, on a specially painted pink court.

Following the game, the players will auction their jerseys live, on-court, with proceeds benefitting the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Mobile Mammography Unit (MMU) and Silver & Black Give Back (SBGB). Last season, the Silver Stars Breast Health Awareness auction raised $41,200 which was put toward services for the unfunded and upgrades to the MMU, as well as SBGB youth programs.

“Breast screening is important and saves the lives of women every day. More than one third of the screenings we provide are unfunded and must be covered by funds raised through donations. We appreciate the support of the San Antonio Silver Stars to better serve our region’s female population to receive this lifesaving screening,” noted Stephanie Krueger, director of development for the Friends of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Foundation.

The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa MMU offers convenient and affordable breast cancer screenings for women in Bexar and 13 surrounding counties, many of whom live a considerable distance from the nearest medical center. Since the opening of the MMU in 2005, we have provided more than 12,000 mammograms. In 2013, the MMU underwent a transformation to include a new design and upgraded digital technology. Since the upgrade, the unit provides an average of 320 screenings per month, a 50 percent increase since the conversion to digital technology.

“Silver & Black Give Back is proud to partner with countless women volunteers – from teachers to nurses to moms – in our work with youth,” said Laura Dixon executive director of Silver & Black Give Back. “Protecting our community partners is in all of our interests. SBGB and the Silver Stars are committed to helping CHRISTUS continue to provide a growing number of screenings in hopes of seeing a growing number of survivors.”

The Mobile Mammography Unit provides approximately 1,000 screening mammograms annually to women who have difficulty accessing these services because of transportation, financial, cultural, or other constraints.
