SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Silver Stars Head Coach and General Manager Dan Hughes has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the organization announced today. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“Coach Hughes is one of the best coaches in the WNBA and has been an integral part of the Silver Stars success over the past eight seasons,” said Frank Miceli, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “Beyond his on court success, Coach Hughes exemplifies Spurs Sports & Entertainment's values of integrity, success and caring and we look forward to his continued leadership of our franchise."

The winningest coach in franchise history with 119 wins in seven seasons, Hughes first joined the Silver Stars as head coach in 2005 and assumed general manager responsibilities the following season. In his eight years with the Silver Stars, he has led the franchise to six-consecutive playoff appearances, including the Western Conference title in 2008. In his 11 years as a WNBA head coach, he has amassed 195 wins – second all-time in WNBA history – and is the league’s all-time leader in games coached (392).

The longest tenured active coach in the WNBA, Hughes is the only floor general in league history to take three different franchises – San Antonio, Cleveland and Charlotte – to the playoffs. He guided the 2008 Silver Stars to a 24-10 mark, earning the best record in the league, the Western Conference title and the franchise’s first trip to the WNBA Finals. Additionally, Hughes has been named WNBA Coach of the Year twice – in 2001 and 2007.

Under Hughes’ guidance, Silver Stars players have earned 12 WNBA All-Star nods, seven All-WNBA First and Second Team honors, four All-WNBA Rookie Team selections, three WNBA All-Defensive team selections and a pair of Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Awards.

Hughes also serves as a member of the five-person USA Basketball Selection Committee - which selected the gold-medal winning teams for the 2010 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games – as well as for the Kay Yow Award.
