Silver Stars top Fever in Final Preseason Game

INDIANAPOLIS – The San Antonio Silver Stars rebounding in game two of the home-and-away preseason series with defending champion Indiana, defeating the Fever, 64-58, on Thursday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Forward Danielle Adams led the Silver Stars with 10 points while center Jayne Appel had a team-best 10 rebounds.

After a closely contested first quarter, the Silver Stars outscored the Fever, 15-13, in the second quarter to take a two-point edge, 26-24, at the half. San Antonio came out of the locker room firing, outscoring the Fever 21-11 in the third quarter to take a lead it would never relinquish.

Twelve different players scored for the Silver Stars in a balanced team effort. The team must cut down its roster to 11 by May 23.

Quoting Fever Head Coach Lin Dunn
“I thought it was a great opportunity to evaluate some of our players. We have some decisions to make, especially while playing without [Jeanette] Pohlen and [Jessica] Davenport who both out indefinitely. So I thought it was important to get [Jessica] Breland, [Jasmine] Hassell and [Sasha] Goodlett some minutes.” “I didn’t think we shot the ball particularly well. I thought we got some good looks, but we missed a lot of shots. You could tell some of our players were tired out there. We had a three-hour practice just the other day and I think there was still some fatigue. I thought [Laysia] Clarendon, in particular, was coming up short on a lot of her shots. She got some really good open looks, but she’s a rookie and just coming off a long college season, she’s bound to need some extra rest. She’ll be ok, but she was short today.”

Quoting Silver Stars Head Coach Dan Hughes
“Preseason game.  We play a lot of people to evaluate and see the progress. We see things we like and don’t like.  I love having preseason with Indiana.  Their talent and effort points out what we need to work on.”

Quoting the Fever’s Briann January (On the preseason)
“Preseason games give us a chance to knock the rust off, get accustom to playing together again, put in some new plays, makes some other tweaks.  It gives the new players a chance to get some reps on the court at game speed.  It’s a great experience for everybody.”

Quoting the Fever’s Sasha Goodlett
“I am excited to get the new season started and work out the chemistry with the new players.  We want to be known as a team that goes out and plays hard for 40 minutes.”

Quoting the Silver Stars’ Danielle Adams
“I thought we did a good job with seven offensive rebounds.  In the second quarter we had a new mentality making our shots.  Coach wanted us to stay focused and set good screens and we made all the necessary adjustments. We played pretty good.”

Quoting the Silver Stars’ Danielle Robinson
“Proud of the way we responded from Saturday.  We had a full team effort.  We have two games to build on for the 24th and I’m looking forward to this season.”
