Stars Outgun Liberty for Seventh Straight Win
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Jia Perkins scored 24 points, Becky Hammon had 23 and Sophia Young added 21 and the San Antonio Silver Stars beat the New York Liberty 94-81 Sunday for their seventh straight victory.
Danielle Adams added 10 points for San Antonio (11-5), which has won nine of 10. The Silver Stars shot 55 percent from the field (38 for 69), including 38 percent (11 for 29) on 3-pointers.
Essence Carson scored 25 points to lead New York (6-10), and Cappie Pondexter had 23. Leilani Mitchell and Nicole Powell added 12 points each.
After New York rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to tie the score at 64 late in the third quarter, Perkins had back-to-back jumpers to give the Silver Stars a four-point lead 45 seconds later.
After Carson had a layup with 2:38 to go - giving her 12 points in the quarter - Young had a layup and a three-point play a little more than a minute apart to put San Antonio up 73-66.
Pondexter's 3 with 6 seconds left pulled the Liberty within four heading to the fourth quarter.
Adams and Powell traded 3s in the opening minute of the fourth for the Silver Stars. After Perkins made a layup for the Silver Stars, Pondexter hit a 3 and Carson had a bank shot to pull New York to 78-77 with 7:42 to go.
However, Hammon and Perkins made 3s about 46 seconds apart to put San Antonio up seven just past the midpoint of the fourth and the Liberty got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Young's layup capped a 6-0 spurt and gave the Silver Stars a 90-79 lead with about 3 minutes to go.
The Liberty shot 46 percent from the field (30 for 65), including 13 for 20 (65 percent) on 3s.
Hammon scored nine points as the Silver Stars had a 20-5 run over the final 5:42 of the second quarter to take a 51-42 lead at the break.
Zomara Morrison's layup started a 12-0 surge, Danielle Robinson's jumper put San Antonio ahead 38-37 and Hammon's 3 pushed the lead to six with 2:49 remaining.
After Pondexter's jumper pulled the Liberty to 47-42 with 7.6 seconds to go in the half, the Silver Stars scored twice in the final 1.3 seconds. Hammon had a layup and Perkins stole the ensuing inbounds pass and layed it in as the buzzer sounded to put San Antonio up nine.
Both teams shot well in the first quarter, with New York at 60 percent (9 for 15) and San Antonio 55 percent (11 for 20). The last seven baskets of the period were 3s - including five by the Liberty.
