Silver Stars State of the Union

In an effort to keep our loyal fans informed as we towards the 2012 season, sat down with head coach and general manager Dan Hughes to talk about the current status of players from the 2011 squad as well as needs the team will address heading into its 10th anniversary season.

As the WNBA free agency period beings, the Silver Stars look forward to building on their 2011 season success, in which the team compiled a 19-18 overall record while earning its fifth-consecutive playoff berth.

Entering the 2012 season, the Silver Stars return a strong core of players, with nine Danielle Adams, Jayne Appel, Tully Bevilaqua, Becky Hammon, Roneeka Hodges, Jia Perkins, Porsha Phillips, Danielle Robinson and Sophia Young under contract. This group includes 87 percent of the team's offensive production from last season, 83 percent of rebounding, 91 percent of assists and 88 percent of steals. The top five scorers from 2011 are all slated to return, including Hammon who led the Silver Stars in scoring average (15.9) and assists per game (5.8) and Young who ranked second in scoring average (13.2) and led the team in rebounds per game (6.4) in 2011.

During the free agency period, the Silver Stars will also continue to monitor players from the 2011 team who have entered free agency. Center Ruth Riley who joined the Silver Stars in 2007 and averaged 5.6 points per game with 3.8 rebounds and .90 blocks last season and guard Scholanda Robinson who was acquired prior to the 2011 season in a trade with Tulsa and averaged 4.8 points per game with 1.5 rebounds and .72 steals - are both unrestricted free agents.

Looking towards improvement, San Antonio will use the free agency period and the fifth overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft to add length to the perimeter and bolster its presence in the post.
