Candace & Coop March for Babies

March of Dimes March for BabiesSparks forward Candace Parker and thousands of supporters were in attendance to March for Babies with the March of Dimes on Saturday, April 25th. With Sparks Head Coach Michael Cooper and Sheri Shephard from “The View” as hosts, the event was a huge success. The event began with an exciting warm-up by the Ole Skool Crew Dance Team followed by opening remarks from Coach Cooper.

The ceremony was both uplifting and touching as sponsors, ambassadors and parents each gave their own personal story of how March of Dimes had touched their lives. The story that touched many hearts was that of young Maddie Spohr whose parents were on hand to share their story. Maddie was born premature, spent the first two months of her life in the hospital before going home on the 68th day. She passed away after 17 months. Maddie’s parents Mike and Heather shared how instrumental March of Dimes was in helping to keep her alive with the proper treatments and how by having the March of Dimes website at their finger tips, they were able to understand and make intelligent and informed decisions for their daughter.

March of Dimes March for Babies“I’m so happy I was able to be part of this incredible event,” said Candace Parker. “Being able to hear people’s stories and participate in such an important movement has been great.”

With a crowd of 5,000 people at the start line led by Michael Cooper and Candace Parker, the 3.2 mile March for Babies in Los Angeles began. With marching band music to get things moving, Sparks staff and fans got going. Coach Cooper did the entire walk while dribbling a basketball and for every 10 dribbles promised to donate $10 to the cause. At the end of the race, he had dribbled $260 worth.

The March for Babies takes place in more than 900 communities across the country with over 1 million participants nationwide. Teams are made up of companies, families and supporters of the cause who walk together to celebrate or honor a baby in their lives. Money raised from the event helps raise funds research to find to find answers to the serious problems that threaten babies.
