National Girls & Women in Sports Day

On Tuesday, February 26, 2008 the Los Angeles Sparks teamed up with Nike to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Local high school students and members of the community filled the gymnasium at Fairfax High School for the event.

Sparks co-owner Kathy Goodman kicked off the evening by welcoming the crowd. Head coach Michael Cooper then moderated a panel discussion that focused on the importance of girls’ participation in sports. Panelists included Sparks superstars Lisa Leslie, Sidney Spencer and Temeka Johnson and general manager Penny Toler.

Following the panel discussion were two back-to-back clinics where students made their way through six different skills stations which included, coaching by Leslie on proper free throw techniques and defensive drills run by Coach Cooper.

Throughout the evening guests were entertained with games, a photo booth, karaoke and refreshments all provided by Nike. Participants were also able to learn about the Nike ATHLETE and Let Me Play program, Nike’s community effort to expand the company’s commitment to sports and physical fitness for youth.
