Los Angeles Sparks MVPs play an integral part in the Sparks organization because not only is their constant, unwavering support second to none but each MVP has their own unique story that makes them special. The Sparks have started a new program to highlight our MVPs call the MVP of the Week. The first MVP of the Week is Denise McCarthy. As a season ticket holder since our inaugural season, Denise’s fondest memories of the Sparks are held to close to her heart because as a single parent, she has purchased season tickets for herself and son and daughter as a way to spend time together in a family friendly environment.
“The Sparks games were a way of bonding for us. The games are a great time with great role models for my kids. I wanted to make sure that my kids had a strong, grounded foundation and buying Sparks tickets was a way for me to do that,” said McCarthy.

As much as the Sparks have meant to Denise, they’ve also played a part in the decisions of her daughter, Kristen, who is a freshman at Temple University. Kristen received media attention after a few break-out games this season and looks back on the time she spent at Sparks games with her mom as one of the driving forces in her decision to play in college.
“The Sparks have meant a lot to our family. It was a way for my brother and I to spend quality time with our mom as a family and enjoy the game of basketball,” said Kristen McCarthy. “I really feel like my mom receiving the MVP of the Week award makes sense because she’s been buying season tickets since before the Sparks were at the STAPLES Center, she’s a good fan and an even better mom. I think she deserves the world.”
Kristen plans to continue to work hard and get better and one day achieve her dream of playing in the WNBA. Her first choice: the Los Angeles Sparks. Her mom, Denise, will be with her every step of the way after just flying in to see Kristen over the weekend to surprise her for her birthday.
Congratulations Denise! See you June 6th!
