Supporting cast should ‘Cash’ in against Washington

After their 77-63 win over the Silver Stars in San Antonio on Wednesday, the Sky return to the Allstate Arena 2-1 for a rematch with Washington on Friday June 1. Chicago tipped off its season in the nation’s capital with a 69-57 victory just two weeks ago and is hoping for another solid outing against the Mystics.

Sylvia Fowles led the charge against Washington in the last meeting with a double-double scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Help from her supporting cast was key, however as fellow Olympian Swin Cash was good for 14 points and Epiphanny Prince added 16, including two three-pointers.

It’s a given that Fowles will be the focal point for the Sky in the rematch, but the scoring around her has been and will continue to be the difference as Chicago moves forward. The Sky dropped their home opener to Indiana as Fowles was unable to carry the team in the fourth quarter on her own, but against San Antonio, Prince (22 points) and Cash (12 points) were major factors in the victory. Their production will be key again as Chicago looks to get their first win in front of a home crowd.

In recent games, late free-throws from Crystal Langhorne helped the Mystics edge Tulsa 64-61 with Washington getting a big boost off the bench from guard Matee Ajavon’s 19 points. And against the defending champion Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday night, the team nearly pulled off an improbable upset losing by two, 79-77.

The Sky backcourt stifled Washington’s guards defensively in the last matchup, limiting starters Noelle Quinn and Natasha Lacy to just nine combined points. With Fowles and Ruth Riley already providing a defensive edge in the paint, another stingy performance should do the trick against the Mystics.
