Lady Sabers Named Sky Team of the Year

The Chicago Sky has named the Streamwood varsity girls’ basketball team the 2013 “Chicago Sky Girls High School Basketball Team of the Year” presented by Under Armour. The Lady Sabers have shown dedication and success on and off the court. The Sky are proud to present them with the honor.

The award was presented at the Chicago Sky Youth Sports Night held Saturday, June 29 while the Sky defeated the Los Angeles Sparks. The team attended the game and was honored on the court at halftime. The winner was chosen by online voters that have been voting since April. Courtesy of Under Armour, the winners received Under Armour gear. The program celebrates the success of local high school girl’s basketball.

On the court, the varsity team made great strides this year. After coming off a few disappointing seasons, the team finished second in the stacked Upstate 8 conference and was able to advance to post-season play. During the post-season, they won their first Regional Conference in 25 years and advanced to the Super Sixteen Sectional Finals in the IHSA 4A State Championships.

They have also shown that giving back is something very important to this team and school. During the 2012 and 2013 academic year, all winter sports at Streamwood High School participated in assisting at Veterans of Hines Hospital and the Fisher House. The girl’s basketball team went above and beyond and brought in a significant amount of donations.

The highlight of the girl’s season was being able to participate in the Holiday Toy Drive for the children of Hanover Township. For one of their home games, the Lady Sabers hosted the toy drive and to gain admission, fans were required to make a toy donation. From there, they visited the Township offices to help sort the thousands of toy that were donated from the community and lastly, served dinner to 300 veterans for the Hanover Township Veterans Honor Roll.

The other finalists that were also in attendance for Youth Sports Night included Stevenson High School, Wheaton North High School, Lane Tech High School, Lockport High School, Morton High School, Bolingbrook High School, Downers Grove South, Niles West, and Palatine High School.
