Sky Signs Kayte Christensen
Christensen was the only player drafted in the third round of the 2002 WNBA draft to make an opening-day roster. During her rookie year in Phoenix, Christensen shot .505 from the field, second among all WNBA rookies. Her 2.7 rebounding average was sixth among rookies. She averaged 4.0 points and 0.8 assists in 30 games.
In her second season in the WNBA, Christensen improved to an average 6.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 0.8 steals in 30 games. In 2003 Christensen won the WNBA Community Assist Award in recognition of her work in the Phoenix community. Christensen also served as the team’s community relations spokesperson and was on the radio broadcast team for Arizona State University Women’s Basketball.
“Kayte is a strong, physical player and brings five years of valuable WNBA experience to the team,” said Sky Head Coach Bo Overton. “Her demonstrated commitment to community involvement speaks volumes about the kind of person she is and we are thrilled to have her on the team.”
Christensen is a California native and played for four years at University of California – Santa Barbara. She was named 2002 Big West Conference Player of the Year and holds the UC Santa Barbara’s school record for career field goal percentage at 54.9%. She also ranks among the top ten in rebounds and blocked shots.
“I am so excited to be a part of the Chicago Sky team,” said Kayte Christensen. “My goal is to contribute as much as I can so that we can win. I’m looking forward to living in Chicago and finding ways to get involved in the community.”
Christensen owns her own wedding and event planning business and likes to play golf in her free time.
