Sky Coaches Clinic

Dozens of coaches from around the greater Chicago area attended the “Sky Coaches Clinic” Sunday at Loyola University in Chicago, Ill. The clinic, run by Sky Head Coach and General Manger Pokey Chatman and Assistant Coach Christie Sides offered expert advice on coaching the game of basketball.

Coaches from Hinsdale South, Lake Forest High School and Oswego High School, to name a few, were in attendance along with the head coach of the Loyola women’s basketball team, Sheryl Swoopes.

To start off the clinic Coach Chatman and Coach Sides walked through their practice and game preparation techniques. During this session, the coaches focused on how to develop organized weekly and season plans for their teams. Afterwards, they hit the court. A squad of practice players demonstrated offensive drills and plays that coaches attending could apply to their team’s playbook.

Throughout the WNBA season, Coach Chatman and Coach Sides prepare their athletes by showing and analyzing game footage. Chatman and Sides had game footage on hand and explained to the coaches in attendance how they utilized the clips and why they were important. After going through the video, they returned to the court to demonstrate and develop defensive coaching skills.

Over pizza provided by Pete’s Pizza, Coaches Chatman and Sides opened the floor for a question and answer session. The two offered specific advice and suggestions to the coaches present.

After taking photos with Coach Chatman, Coach Sides and Coach Swoopes, the clinic coaches used their game ticket, provided as part of their clinic registration, to cheer on the Loyola Ramblers women’s basketball team as they took down the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (67-48) in an afternoon match up.

Coaches in attendance at the clinic will also join the Sky for Opening night in May, 2014!
