High School Girls Team of the Week: Morgan Park

The Chicago Sky named the Morgan Park High School Girls’ Basketball team the High School Girls Team of the Week for the week of Jan. 19 for its excellence on and off the basketball court.

The Morgan Park Mustangs are currently 18-3 and are ranked No. 13 in the Sun-Times Super 25 and No. 11 in the Chicago Tribune area rankings. The Mustangs have won in bunches with winning streaks of 11 games, four games and three games respectively. The season-long 11 game winning streak was capped off by a 62-42 win over Marist which is now ranked No. 11by the Sun-Times. Kendyl Nunn led Morgan Park in the win with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Morgan Park Mustangs can attribute much of this year’s success to their perseverance and commitment off the court. As the players come up through the Morgan Park girls’ basketball program they often play on multiple teams simultaneously, whether it’s a freshman playing on both the frosh and frosh/soph teams or a sophomore playing on both the varsity and frosh/soph teams. The players also spend plenty of time in the weight room throughout the year. However, the only weight room at Morgan Park High School is located in the boys’ locker room. No matter the adversity, this year’s Morgan Park team has been led by Raven Nelson, a senior who has earned a basketball scholarship to Eastern Michigan University and Jasmine Barber a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Morgan Park High School is located 1744 West Pryor Avenue in Chicago.

The Morgan Park High School Girls Basketball Team will be provided a complimentary Team Night Out ticket package to a 2011 Sky regular season home game at Allstate Arena, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. They will meet and talk to Sky players and coaches before the game and be honored on the Sky court during the game. They will also have the Sky experience brought to one of their home games.

The Sky will be recognizing one High School Girls basketball team each week throughout the 2010-11 basketball season as part of its High School Girls Team of the Week program. The Sky is now accepting nominations from parents, coaches, faculty members and players. To submit a nomination form electronically click here. Access the form in PDF format here .
