High School Girls Team of the Week: Oak Lawn

The Chicago Sky named the Oak Lawn Community High School Girls’ Basketball team the High School Girls Team of the Week for the week of Dec. 22 for its excellence on and off the basketball court.

Off the court, the Oak Lawn girls’ basketball program hosts the Sully Shuffle each year to honor Assistant Coach Skip Sullivan who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. The Sully Shuffle is a 5K run and fundraiser that generates money to benefit the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA). The girls deliver letters and hang flyers before the race to help raise money. On race day the girls work water stations, racer check-in and other parts of the race to ensure it runs smoothly. Through the relationship generated with the Illinois chapter of the APDA the girls also volunteer at several other events throughout the year. Oak Lawn Community High School is located at 9400 Southwest Hwy. in Oak Lawn, IL.

The Oak Lawn Girls’ Basketball team is currently 6-7, coming off a season-long four-game winning streak. During the streak the Spartans defeated Harlan, Evergreen Park, Bremen and Thornridge. In the win 53-39 over Thornridge that kicked-started the streak, senior Bridget Niemiec led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Oak Lawn is currently in the midst of hosting its own holiday tournament.

The Oak Lawn Community High School Girls Basketball Team will be provided a complimentary Team Night Out ticket package to a 2011 Sky regular season home game at Allstate Arena, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. They will meet and talk to Sky players and coaches before the game and be honored on the Sky court during the game. They will also have the Sky experience brought to one of their home games.

The Sky will be recognizing one High School Girls basketball team each week throughout the 2010-11 basketball season as part of its High School Girls Team of the Week program. The Sky is now accepting nominations from parents, coaches, faculty members and players. To submit a nomination form electronically click here. Access the form in PDF format here .
