Girl Up

The Chicago Sky announced today that it will be hosting a Fundraising Salon for Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation initiative, from 5:30-7:30pm at Allstate Arena prior to when the Sky takes on the New York Liberty on Friday, July 23, 2010.

Chicago Sky President and CEO Margaret Stender will speak during the Salon and Girl Up advocate, actress Jennifer Beals will also be in attendance.

“This is an important cause that the Sky is delighted to be involved in,” said Stender. “We are grateful for any chance we can take help out girls in need.”

Girl Up is an innovative campaign, created by the United Nations Foundation, to address the needs of adolescent girls in developing countries. The campaign aims to mobilize American girls to raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world’s most vulnerable adolescent girls.

Girl Up asks supporters to give a “High Five” to girls in developing countries by donating $5 or more to provide girls with access to school supplies, clean water, health services, safety from violence and more. The campaign also asks girls to take advantage of their social networks to raise awareness.

In addition to the Salon, the Sky will be hosting a Girlafesto gathering on the concourse during the game. The Girlafesto gathering will provide a chance for people to sign up and make donations to Girl Up.
