Get to Know Jess Breland

Where did you grow up and what was it like?
I grew up in North Carolina, in a town with maybe 300 or 400 people there. No traffic lights, just stop signs, it was pretty cool though because you get to know everyone and itís like a family in the community.

Why did you choose to be a Tar Heel when it came time for college?
I knew I didnít want to leave North Carolina. So in choosing between University of North Carolina and Duke, I went UNC.

Growing up with siblings, how was that?
I have three older sisters. My oldest sister and I are 14 years apart. They are role models to me. They created a path for me being a woman myself.

When did you start playing basketball?
In the back yard in North Carolina. I was always the only girl on the court.

Who is the biggest role model in your life?
My high school coach. I donít think I have gained as much basketball wise from her, but life wise she was huge.

What is your greatest sports moment?
The biggest one for me was my first game coming back from cancer. When I think of it, it still gives me chills.

Any personal goals for the 2014 season?
Right now I just look forward to continuing to play with these talented players and figuring out what can I bring to help out the Sky and help be the glue that brings an already great team together as we strive for the ultimate goal Ė the WNBA Championship.

Favorite Chicago place to eat?
We recently went to Giordanoís and that was delicious! It was great and actually the first time being downtown in Chicago.

What are you doing when youíre off the court?
I play Xbox. I love gaming, but outside of that itís sleeping and shopping.

Any hidden talents?
I braid hair. I asked my teammates, especially the really girlie girl ones if they can, but Iím the only one. I even braid my own hair.

Best piece of advice you have ever received?
Whatever you put in your mind comes out in your life. It helped me through all my treatments.

Favorite part about Chicago?
The city is beautiful, but thus far itís the shopping malls and food.

Where did you get your talents as an athlete?
Iím the only one in my family so I donít know. A lot of times itís like, where did I come from?
